UNIVERSAL PICTURES’ EPIC ACTION-ADVENTURE SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN WILL NOW BE RELEASED IN NORTH AMERICA ON JUNE 1, 2012 Breathtaking New Vision of the Legendary Tale Stars Kristen Stewart, Oscar® Winner Charlize Theron, Chris Hemsworth and Sam Claflin UNIVERSAL CITY, CA, May 15, 2011 – Universal Pictures announced today that its epic action-adventure Snow White and the Huntsman will make a bold move into the early summer movie season with its new release date of June 1, 2012. The much anticipated film stars Twilight’s Kristen Stewart, Academy Award® winner Charlize Theron, Thor’s Chris Hemsworth and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides’ Sam Claflin. This breathtaking new vision of the legendary tale from Joe Roth, the producer of Alice in Wonderland, and acclaimed commercial director and state-of-the-art visualist Rupert Sanders (Halo 3 campaign) had originally been set for release in late December of next year. With adjustments to the production timeline, however, the film will now be ready for a summer 2012 release date. In Snow White and the Huntsman, Stewart plays the only person in the land fairer than the evil queen (Theron) who is out to destroy her. But what the wicked ruler never imagined is that the one girl threatening her reign has been training in the art of war with a huntsman (Hemsworth) who was dispatched to kill her. Claflin plays the prince long enchanted by Snow White's beauty and power. “As Rupert and Joe were finalizing casting and preproduction of Snow White and the Huntsman, we realized that the ambitious and fully-formed world they had promised was blowing away all expectations,” said Universal Chairman Adam Fogelson and Co-Chairman Donna Langley in a joint statement. “We’re thrilled that Universal will be bringing this singular version of a timeless story almost seven months earlier than anticipated.”

SWATH Panel At Comic Con With Kristen - Recap, Videos & Photos

Fan Pictures:  via @yellowhyacinth

As you may or may not know, there are roughly a bajillion Snow White projects currently in development. While some are further along than others, one of the most high profile adaptations is Universal’s Snow White and the Huntsman. Directed by Rupert Sanders, the film stars Kristen Stewart, Chris Hemsworth, and Charlize Theron. Sanders and the actors were all present today for the film’s panel in Hall H, where we got our first look at what to expect from the film (hint: it’s epic, dark, and gritty).
Hit the jump for my full recap of the Snow White and the Huntsman panel, plus the first images from the film.
snow-white-and-the-huntsman-image-chris-hemsworthModerator Dave Karger introduced director Rupert Sanders and producers Joe Roth and Palak Patel. When asked what it was that appealed to him about the Snow White story, Roth said he wanted to come up with an idea that everybody knows and find some deep seeded emotional connection to it. He wanted to do a modern version of a story that has emotional roots. Patel said Sanders was the first director he had in mind when he started to develop the project.
When asked how Universal’s film differs from Relativity’s Snow White project, Roth said they’re very different pieces. He said Snow White and the Huntsman is on the scale of Lord of the Rings, and it’s a “tough, rough male and female action movie.” He said Relativity’s film looks to be quite a bit softer. He brought up Armageddon and Deep Impact, and said they opened seven weeks apart and both did really well. He did some research and said he found that people were more likely to see Armageddon if they had seen Deep Impact. He said the 10 weeks that lie between the Snow White films is “a lifetime” in movie time.
They then showed a clip reel of commercials directed by Sanders, including Call of Duty: Black Opsand Halo 3, which the audience responded to enthusiastically (because everybody loves commericals).
snow-white-and-the-huntsman-image-sam-claflinSanders said he initially wanted to create a war movie with his first foray into feature films, but he said he loves the epic scope of Snow White. He said what he does best is create very large landscapes that are full of emotion. He said to work from one of the classics is a great way to lose his cinematic virginity.
Castmembers Kristen Stewart, Chris Hemsworth, Sam Claflin, and Charlize Theron then came onstage. Stewart said their Snow White is kind of the people’s leader. Theron said the actors have only met each other briefly, since filming doesn’t start until next week, but she thinks Stewart is gonna give her a run for her money, adding “And I’m ready for it bitch, let’s go.”
Hemsworth was asked what it’s like to be in such huge movies all of a sudden. He said the take onHuntsman is different from the Snow White we’ve grown up with, and is an epic version that’s dark and gritty.
Sanders then revealed some images of the cast in their costumes as well as some test footage he put together rather quickly with different actors to give the audience an idea of what the film will be like. They shot the footage in three days on a ranch. What we saw was actually really cool. It had an almost Guillermo del Toro or Tarsem Singh feel to it, as it’s a bit stylized and full of strange mystical creatures (a guy covered in white, with pointed ears, crawled out of a raven), though it’s grounded a bit more in reality than del Toro or Singh’s work. I was actually pretty impressed with what Sanders put together with such little time, and I think with an actual budget and the film’s stars this could end up being a fairly epic and dark fantasy film.
snow-white-and-the-huntsman-image-charlize-theronWhen asked about what it’ll be like to work onset, Stewart gave her answer saying she’s ready to go and work hard and Theron replied, “Well I’m an Oscar winner so…” The crowd erupted with laughter. The cast seems to get along really well, despite having only known each other briefly, and they were all really funny. To be honest, Stewart seemed to be having much more fun on this panel than the Breaking Dawnpanel earlier in the week.
Sanders recounted going to see Stewart to talk about the movie on the set of Twilight. He walked into her trailer and she was chewing on a cigarette while dressing her own wound on her stomach.
They showed images of the cast in costumes. First up were the dwarves (of which there are eight). The faces of the actors looked like they have been digitally manipulated or put onto other bodies, but I couldn’t tell if they were little people or not. Their garb was gritty and worn, and they kind of looked like a ragtag band of warriors. They didn’t specify if the actors would be digitally manipulated in the final film or if this was just for the costume test purposes.
Kristen Stewart Snow White and the HuntsmanNext was Sam Clafin as The Prince, who was done up in super shiny armor and would not be out of place inLord of the Rings. Hemsworth as the huntsman looked decidedly badass, with worn and beaten-up clothing and a very big axe swung over his shoulder. Theron as the Queen looked dastardly. She had triangle-shaped sequins all over her dress and a super high collar, with an incredibly violent-looking dagger in her hands. Finally, Stewart looked much more like Joan of Arc than a Disney princess. She wielded a big shield, and was covered in raggedy armor.
Asked about what drew them to the project, Theron cited the fact that George Miller’s Mad Max film was pushed back and she was left without a project. She said she liked the cast, Roth, Sanders, and the idea they had of turning the classic tale upside down. She said she’s playing the Queen as a serial killer.
Overall, this panel gave a much better idea of whatSnow White and the Huntsman will be. While two Snow White reboots seems excessive, I have a feeling Tarsem Singh’s version will be wildy different than this one. Huntsman looks to be very dark and super gritty (a hard PG-13 for sure), and White is more a warrior than a spurned princess. The scope is veryepic as well, drawing lots of similarities to Lord of the Rings. I was pretty impressed with Sanders’ vision and I’m eager to see what he has in store.

3:36 We’re back for Snow White and the Huntsman! Who’s ready to see Kristen Stewart? But before that, Rupert Sanders (director), Joe Roth (producer) and Evan Daugherty (writer) hit the stage.
3:37 Rupert promises that we will get to see images from the movie and compares Huntsman to Lord of the Rings “in terms of size and scope.”
3:39 Regarding whether anyone is concerned about that other Snow White movie, Joe Roth says, “People don’t remember that Tom Hanks did the fifth body-switching movies when he did Big”
3:44 After being shown a reel of Rupert’s commercial work, the director says that he actually wanted to do a war movie but ended up with Snow White. Still, it’s “full of giant battle scenes full of exploding knights.” Rupert says that he is excited to “lose his cinematic virginity” on this project.
3:46 Finally, they are introducing cast members: Sam Claflin, Chris Hemsworth, Charlize Theron and Kristen Stewart. Wild applause!
3:47 On why Kristen wants to play Snow White: “I wasn’t initially jumping at the chance [to play Snow White] but she is one of the most heavy-handedly sincere, seriously doesn’t let her heart cloud her mind characters. Also, I get to have a sword and stuff.”
3:49 The moderator asks whether Charlize is worried about co-starring with an actress as talented as Stewart. Charlize responds, “She’s probably going to give me a run for my money. And I’m ready for it bitch. Let’s go.”
3:51 Claflin said that his parents “think that it’s a crock” that he is playing Prince Charming. “They’re all as surpised as I am, to be quite honest, to be involved in something as big as this” but warns that “the prince is not quite as charming” in this version.
3:53Wardrobe note: Charlize is wearing black and Kristen is wearing white. Was this planned? Good vs. evil, etc?
3:55 Since the cast doesn’t know each other that well, the moderator has a few questions planned so that everyone can get to know each other. Sam says that
4:00 Surprise. We see the first shot of the dwarves but there are eight of them! As Rupert introduces them, Hall H claps the loudest for Bob Hoskins. Rupert explains that there are eight because one ends up getting killed.
4:02 Next up, a photo of Claflin as Prince. Black and white, holding a sword. Sexy. As Hall H makes cat calls, Claflin says that he is very uncomfortable.
4:03 Hemsworth as the Huntsman. He is holding an ax, sexily, over his shoulder. His hair is wet and slicked back. This photo belongs on the cover of a romance novel.
4:05 Theron as the Queen is next. She is in a fitted black dress with a high feathered collar.
4:06 Kristen Stewart as the most badass Snow White ever. In this first photo, she is wearing armor! And holding a shield and sword. “My pinhead sticks out of that enormous thing.”
Theron: “Don’t worry, we’ll get you steroids. You’ll be fine.”
4:07 A fan directs a question at Stewart, fidgeting onstage. On how she relates to Snow White, Stewart jokes, “Well, I’m the fairest in the land and I have a seriously good heart.”
4:08 Theron explains how it was important for her to understand the Queen’s motivations: “I don’t think this is just the evil queen who just shows up and she is evil. I think a lot of her circumstances will bleed in her action and that’s the most important thing to me. […] My character is basically a serial killer. Watch out, Kristen.”
4:09 A fan asks what kind of music Kristen is listening to in preparation for the role. Kristen says nothing really. Charlize jokes that she has recorded some music that Kristen can listen to. The fan then asks for Kristen’s Comic-Con name tag and the audience boos. Kristen offers to throw it to the fan but a Comic-Con volunteer says this cannot be done.
4:10 Kristen says that she is excited to play someone who is “not remotely self-conscious” and “who isn’t really aware of who she is but has such a strong sense of self.” Also, Kristen really likes that her character “gets to save the day.”
4:12 A fan yells out K-Stew. Charlize asks, “Me too?” When she is corrected, Charlize admits that she needs a hearing aid.
4:14 Joe Roth says that “truth be told” he was looking for an unknown Snow White. “The more we thought about it, here is this woman who has proven within a franchise to be a big, big star. The idea to get her out of the franchise and put her into a different movie” was appealing.
4:15 The moderator says that they are out of time and the panel ends. Boo! So fast.
